Development of a plant-based expression systems to produce therapeutic proteins

Plants offer many advantages over conventional hosts for the production of subunit vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, including increased affordability, scalability, and negligible risk of contamination with human pathogens. In response to the 2019 global pandemic, our lab redirected our efforts towards developing a vaccine in plants that would be safe and effective against SARS-CoV2. We are presently also exploring the use of plants as a means of producing monoclonal antibodies, which may be used to treat infectious diseases, cancers, and auto-immune disorders. This is a new area of research for us, and we welcome contact with researchers with relevant expertise who are willing to offer advice in helping us achieve these ambitious goals.
